In a four years' experiment the effect of sowing rate and date on the yield of chives seeds in the first year of harvest was studied. In 1997-2000 seeds of chives were sown at the rate of 3, 6 and 9 kg/ha, in one month intervals, starting as early as possible, i.e. in the middle of April or May till the middle of August. The seedstalks were collected in June in the years 1998-2001. The experiment was set as a completly randomized blocks desing in four replicates. The number of inflorescences and the seed yield were assessed. In all years, significant decrease of inflorescence number was stated as a result of delay of sowing. Plants sown in August did not flower the first sprong. A significant effect of sowing rate was recorded only in one year when the most numerous umbels were formed at the highest sowing rate
