One-day-old Astra S laying type male chicks (n=190) and ISA Vedetta broiler chicks (188 cockerels and 188 pullets) were fed ad libitum on standard concentrates: DKA-starter (to week 3). DKA grower (from week 4 to 6) and DKA-finisher (from week 7 to 12). From week 3 of life 10 laying type cockerels, 10 broiler cockerels and 10 broiler pullets were slaughtered at weekly intervals. Laying types cockerels were found to consume more concentrates per body weight unit, edible parts of lean content in the carcass and to obtain a lower European Production Index (EPI) compared to broiler cockerels and pullets. Likewise, they were inferior to broiler chickens in terms of most of the slaughter value traits: a lower dressing percentage, smaller contribution of prime breast parts with a higher contribution of legs, lower lean content in the carcass and a less favourable lean to bone ratio. The only two traits that showed better results for laying type cockerels compared with broiler cockerels and pullets were the lean to fat ratio and percentage of fat with skin in the carcass
