The objective of present study was to compare growth performance and carcass traits of Pietrain (P) and Zlotnik Spotted (ZS) pigs and their crossbreds with 75 percent P (C) evaluated in 1969 (Exp. I) and 1997 (Exp. II). Each group consisted of 16 pigs in exp. I and 30 ones in exp. II. The fattening period lasted from 30 to 110-115 kg with standardized feeding (I) or from 30 to 105 kg with feeding ad libitum (II). The fodders used cantained 170-175 g crude protein and 12.2-12.5 MJ per kg dry matter. A detailed dissection of carcass primal cuts (I) or valuable ones only (II) was performed. Changes observed during last 28 years reffered to an increase of growth rate in all pig groups and decrease of feed conversion ratio. This substantial progress is believed to be a reflection of genetic improvement of pigs and better quality of fodders in respect of satisfying demands of growing pigs. Moreover, favourable changes occurred in respect of carcass fatness and meatness. The average backfat thickness decreased, loin eye area increased, meat weight in basic cuts increased. It should be stressed that Zlotnik Spotted pigs are a local breed of minor importance, the breeding value of which has not been improved in respect of their carcass traits
