The aim of the present paper was to determine the competitiveness between spring crops (barley, oat, triticale, rye) and lupines (blue, yellow) in the fields of mixtures of these species and the importance of interspecific competition for mixture growing production effects. The source data was obtained from a long-term field experiment performed in the Kujawy region on very good rye soil. There was demonstrated a strong interspecific competition between spring cereal crops and lupine plants in mixtures. Cereal crops enjoy a competitive advantage in the fields due to their greater plant density than that of lupine plants. Yellow lupine showed a greater applicability to mixtures with spring cereal crops than blue lupine. The best were the following mixtures: spring triticale, spring barley or spring rye with yellow lupine
