The environment of Pirot region is contaminated by pollutants from industry, agriculture and communal waste materials and trafic. In the air, ground and water of Pirot region there are many pollutants such as SO2, NOx, CO, Pb, Cd, Mn, cinder, soot, ect. These pollutants get into the food chain through plants and in that way they are dangerous to man. Plants has developed a few defensive mechanisms. Catalase is enzyme which take a part in defencing plants from pollution. Activity of catalase is unconstant in subterranean and overground plant parts in examined herbs, and it is different to different species. Activity of catalase depends on the species of herb, concentration of pollutant and the period of life cycle in their own surrounding. Catalase take a part in high-quality defence mechanism because it degrades harmful products of metabolism which arise influenced by pollution, to products which are not harmful for herbs.
