In a 4x4 diallel crossing experiment without the reciprocals (HVW-247, Partisan, NS-293 and Jap.-15) the mode of inheritance, the gene effect and combining abilities for the spike length and spikelets number per spike in F1 and F2 generations were investigated. The modes of inheritance of the traits examined were partial dominance, dominance or overdominance, depending on the crossing combination. The analysis of combining abilities showed that the spike length and spikelet number per spike were determined by the genes with additive and non-additive effects. The NS-293 cultivar as a parent with the highest mean for both traits and also the best general combiner for spike length and spikelet number can be used as a parent in programmes of breeding multi-rowed barley for increased spike length and spikelet bnumber per spike.
