Influence of Seledant on oxidative damage of proteins and formation of colostral immunity at newborn calves

The preparation Seledant was studied for efficacy to correct the selenium status in pregnant cows and to estimate the influence on accumulation of colostral immunoglobulins in the blood serum of neonatal calves. The experiment involved 2 groups of cows vaccinated against colibacillosis and salmonellosis 1.5 and 1 month before calving. The cows of the first group and the calves obtained from them were control, the cows of group 2 and the calves at day 1 after birth received Seledant administered. A biochemical study has found the age dynamics of the level of oxidative protein modification (OPM) in the calves of the 1 and 2 groups before giving colostrums and at days 1, 3, 10-15 and 30-35 of postnatal period. The administration of Seledant to the calves of group 2 had normalizing influence on the intensity of OPM and lipid processes under oxidative stress in calves in early postnatal period. With the most intensive absorption at the first 12-24 hours of life colostral immunoglobulins underwent oxidative modification and lost their functional activity. The activation of antioxidant system in the experimental calves (group 2) were characterized by decreasing the concentration of malondialdehyde and increasing the level of IgG – 32%, IgM – 62% at day 1 after birth and longer time of their accumulation (until day 3 of life) compared to the control. It is concluded that the administration of Seledant to mother cows before calving and calves at day 1 after birth positively influence the formation of colostral immunity in newborn calves through extending the period of passive absorption of colostral immunoglobulins protecting them from infectious diseases.
