The role and place of agrifood sector (AFS) in the social economic development of Russia are assessed. The maon trends of global and Russian agriculture development in the 2d half of the 20th century are considered. It is stated that Russian agriculture is in the systemic crisis that has 4 distinctive features: 1) AFS structural deformation and a break of economical linkages and proportions; 2) loss of soil fertility, set-aside of considerable arable land areas in many regions; the soil is not restored, organic and mineral fertilizer application has been reduced, infrastructure worsened; 3) decrease of agriculture state support and disregard of earlier applied targeting methods of AFS regulation, resulted in the low level of competitiveness in the domestic and foreign markets; 4) increasing lag of rural development, dicharges due to the liquidation of agricultural enterprices. Two scenarios of AFS development are considered: the extensive and intensive ones. The 1st one implies slow overcoming the crisis through active agrarian policy and increasing financial support. The 2d one implies adoption of innovations in technological, management, economical and social domains under agrarian policy at the federal and regional levels.
