The conducted theoretical researches have been aimed at working out genetic methods of efficient utilization of selected genetic resources of oat, rye and barley and disclosing regularities in variability and hereditability of major breeding characters. In addition to the complex field evaluation carried the valuable genetic diversity is studied and identified to meet burning requirements of breeding practice in different regions of the Russian Federation. The problems of resistance to major diseases, earliness, semidwarfness, drought resistance, grain quality (ensured by the content and the composition of protein, lysine, fat, separate fatty acids, starch, antioxidants, etc.) and grain productivity in barley and oat selection are being solved successfully on the basis of scientific achievements and available breeding sources. Utilization of new genes controlling semidwarfness, cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) and disease resistance in rye helped to overcome the problem of lodging, develop for this crop new breeding approaches to enhance disease resistance and winter hardiness, and facilitate rye breeding on the basis of CMS. The genetic collections of germplasm accessions possessing identified genes responsible for a broad variety of economically valuable traits are maintained and studied. All the materials selected or created by the Department are forwarded to breeding centres to be included in oat, rye and barley breeding processes.
