Leaf spot and blight on watermelon and other cucurbits is economically very important disease wherever they are grown. Disease is caused by plant pathogenic fungus, Alternaria cucumerina. Alternaria leaf spots of cucurbits usually appear in the oldest leaves and later spread to the newer leaves towards the tips of the vine. Leaf spot begin as bright to pale yellow flecks surrounded by light green or yellow halos. The spot are usually circular, brown-black and have target like appearance. If disease becomes severe, defoliation, premature fruit ripening, lower yields, lower fruit sugar and fruit deformity are frequent consequence. The pathogen is carried over from season to season in crop debris and by seed. The disease is controlled by cultural measures, like crop rotation, sanitation, balanced fertilization and regulating water regime, as well as by applying fungicides when needed.
