Studies on mango (Mangifera indica.L) Propagation Techniques
2006
Abdel Gader, A.I.
Four experiments were carried out at Shambat Research Station nursery and Almogran's nursery to investigate the effect of different germination media, seed orientation on mango seed germination, The effect of Mono and poly embryonic rootstocks in the success of grafts and the last experiment was conducted to determine the optimum time for cleft grafting technique. Completely randomized design was used in these experiments. The result indicated that there were significant differences among germination media on days required for germination. However seeds planted in the sand took more days to germinate compared to the other media and this also was true in the number of leaves. Significant differences were obtained in germination percentage, plant height and stem diameter, the mixture of sand + river silt (1: 1) gave higher values in the three parameters. No significant differences were found between germination media on diameter of roots , Seeds planted in sawdust gave higher values than seeds planted in the other two media. Data indicated a significant difference with respect to the effect of germination media on root length. Results indicated that orientation of Kitchener mango seeds has no effect on germination percentage, emergence and root characters. The embryonic character (Mono or Poly-embryony) had a highly significant effect regarding growth parameters (plant height, number of leaves and stem diameter) Awaise and Mabroka had showed higher values compared to other cultivars (Alphonso, Khartoumi, Taimour and Kitchener-). The use of Mabroka and Awai"se rootstocks in grafting Abusamaka scions resulted in higher percentage of graft success, on the other hand, Kitchener seeds take more days to germinate compared with other cultivars, and the opposite with A waise. The results showed more graft success obtained when cleft grafting techniques was applied in the rainy months (June, July and August) compared to other months of the year
