Extending the period for propagation of walnut (Juglans regia L.) by combining hot callusing, hypocotyl grafting and patch budding methods
2008
Gandev, S., Fruit-Growing Institute, Plovdiv (Bulgaria)
The experiment was carried out with the walnut cultivar Izvor 10 grafted on common walnut rootstock (Juglans regia). The propagation methods used were hot callusing, hypocotyl grafting and patch budding, applied in three different seasons, and, respectively in three different phenophases of plant development. The results showed that throughout the year, the combination of the methods hot callusing, hypocotyl grafting and patch budding enabled successful propagation of walnut and extended the period suitable for grafting. It was found out that callus formation in walnut was possible during the phenophases winter dormancy, shoot growth and end of shoot growth, however, the decisive factor for callus formation were not the phenophases but the propagation method applied with its caharacteristic technological decisions and temperature conditions.
