Highly variable results on field capacity and efficiency of tillage implements were reported in some studies in the Department of Agricultural Engineering, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Khat1oum. This indicated the need to adopt a systematic procedure for the precise determination of machine field capacity and efficiency. To test the reliability of this systematic procedure, a study was carried out during April and May 2004 in the Demonstration Farm of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Khartoum, Shambat, Sudan. The study comprised testing a ridger (used for ploughing as a reduced tillage implement) and a chisel and a disc plough in three replicates for each implement on plots of 25xlO m. The different factors involved in the procedure were machine average and rated width and speed, total and net productive time and number of runs taken by the implement to finish working the plot. The procedure was verified by matching the field capacity and efficiency, based on field data, with those calculated using field capacity mathematical formulae. The results showed that the adopted procedure gave consistent results, which were successfully verified using the mathematical relationships
