A ten-year study (1995-2004) was carried out with three winter wheat cultivars (Sremica, Lasta, Pobeda) differing in yield and grain quality potentials in a stationary field trial at Rimski Sancevi Experimental Station, Novi Sad, Serbia. The following four levels of nitrogen fertilization were applied: 0, 60, 120, and 180 kg N/ha. The highest, i.e. lowest grain yield at all N-rates and on the average was obtained by the cultivar Pobeda, i.e. Sremica, respectively. The highest average yield was obtained with the highest N rate (180 kg N/ha), but it did not statistically differ from the yield gained with 120 kg N/ha. Increasing N-doses caused statistically significant linear increase of the grain protein content up to the maximum value of 13.4 % achieved with the N-rate of 180 kg/ha. The highest, i.e. the lowest protein content was obtained with the cultivar Sremica, i.e. the cultivar Lasta, respectively. The cultivar Sremica had the highest test weight (83.8 kg/hl) with 180 kg N/ha. The 1000-kernel weight with 180 kg N/ha was significantly lower in the cultivars Lasta and Sremica than in the cultivar Pobeda.
