Dependence of pea quality on growing system

As far as the utility value of Pisum sativum L. is concerned, the evaluated indicators were in accordance with the Codex Alimentarius (Food Standards), and the indicators, which give a more complex characterisation of pea seeds from a technological and nutritive point of view, were evaluated as well. Pisum sativum L. (cultivar Olivin) was grown on two localities close to Nitra city, within the framework of an integrated and ecological growing system (E), with two different ways of soil cultivation (conventional, minimal) and as a growing system (T) with two ways of soil cultivating and three variants of fertilizing. The results of the four year-research period (1994 - 1997) indicated that the year of growing has the most significant influence on the content of important seed components (crude proteins, oil, ash, calcium, potassium, phosphorus, starch, sugars and fibre). Neither the growing system (integrated, ecological) nor the way of soil cultivating significantly influenced the important indicators of the pea quality. Only the contents of the total and non-reducing sugars were influenced by the growing system and fertilizing influenced the potassium content in seeds. The granularity and cooking ability were significantly influenced by the soil cultivation. The negative correlation between the content of crude proteins and the content of starch was confirmed. The interesting correlations were also found between the other parameters.
