Mass incidence of scrapie in the sheep breeding in Slovakia - the epizootological analysis, clinical course, geneotypization

Based upon the clinical picture of scrapie in sheep in the farm Turiec Dubove, laboratory diagnosis of scrapie, analysis of genotypes in scrapie-positive sheep, results of genotypization and conclusions of epizootological investigation, the breeding programme for resistance of sheep against scrapie has been adopted and carried out. This programme consists of: identification of sheep within the scope of the law No. 488/2002 D.L. on the veterinary care, 18, under which animals must be identified and their identifying data must be recorded in the central register of animals; examination of all animals in breeding for genotypization (genetic sensitivity), using only rams with the genotype ARR/ ARR (group R1) for breeding, on the basis of the genetic examination, the animals susceptible to scrapie (rams of the groups R2, R3, R4, R5, ewes and lamb-ewes of the group R4, R52, and genotype ARQ/ ARQ) do not mate, to cull from reproduction and to send to slaughter, ewes with a genetic predisposition to scrapie (mated), before lambing to isolate, after lambing and weaning to send to slaughter together with lambs, after five generations, there is a precondition to give the herd a statute of the level I if the herd consists only of sheep of the genotype ARR/ARR. From the whole Slovakia point of view: regularly examine all the strain rams for genotypization, every year to test for genotypization breeding tup rams included in breedings, to intensify the monitoring of scrapie in sense of the Provision No. 999/2001 ES and its amendments.
