In the set of 55 winter wheat varieties (40 bred in Slovakia) gibberellic acid insensitive dwarfing gene Rht 1 and gibberellic acid responsive dwarfing gene Rht 8 were detected by molecular markers. At 25 varieties plant height was determined by Rht 8 and at 16 varieties by both genes Rht 1 + Rht 8. Plant height was determined in pot experiment established in three replications by randomised block design. Varieties with the lowest plant height possess genes Rht 1 + Rht 8. 165 bp allele was detected at 5 varieties with plant height comparable with varieties 174 bp allele (4 varieties). Plant height was significantly decreased with the year of variety registration, but only till 1976.
