Energy security and climate change imperatives require large-scale substitution of petroleum-based fuels as well as improved vehicle efficiency. The most powerful potential for this substitution has a production of bioethanol from agriculture. In Czech Republic, respective in whole central Europe wheat is aimed for this production. Unfortunately there are no wheat varieties specialized for bioethanol production, because breeding has been long focused on food and animal feed quality. Wheat variety should have high content of starch as a source of glucose for ethanol fermentation. For success of breeding is important presence of gene sources. We had screened 90 landraces and varieties for starch content. Results showed content of starch in range from 60% to 68.2% of dry matter. It is possible to say that there are present gene sources with high starch content suitable for breeding of wheat for bioethanol production. Quality of starch should be important factor too and it is under research.
