Study on the susceptibility of hazelnut cultivars to injuries caused by the European goat moth, Cossus cossus L. (Lepidoptera, Cossidae)

The study was carried out in hazelnut orchards in the region of Kardzhali during the period of 20002005. The present paper focuses on the development and the damages caused by the European goat moth, Cossus cossus L. that has become more serious problem in hazelnut orchards in the recent years. Surveys were conducted on 11 hazelnut cultivars with different origins. In Bulgaria, the major cultivars are grafted on C. colurna rootstock which has a high resistance to the main pests attacking the hazelnut crop. The results showed that some of the European cultivars with C. avellana origin (Gustafov and Uebov) are more susceptible to this pest species. The cultivars Rimski, Bademoviden and Ran Trapezundski were less attacked by the pest as compared to the European cultivars. In both cases no injuries were observed in the engrafting area. The damages do not depend on the plant growing vigor are not related to the late incompatibility, which is typical for the cultivars on C. colurna rootstock
