Quantitative and qualitative characteristics of milk with a different level of somatic cells for the cows of the black-and-white breed

The study was carried out on 400 individual monthly tests of milk obtained from healthy cows reared and fed at the same conditions in the Agricultural Institute – Stara Zagora. The monthly tests were carried out during the autumn-winter period (October – March) of 2005-2006. The following average daily quantitative characteristics were determined: test day milk yield (kg), butterfat (kg), protein (kg) and the qualitative characteristics – fat content (%), total protein (%) and number of somatic cells/ml in the milk. The individual milk samples (the averages of the evening and the morning milking) were analyzed with Milko Tester MK III, Pro Milk MK II and Fossomatik 300. The samples were divided into two groups depending on the lactation stage – up to 120 days of lactation (N=165) and after the 120th day of lactation (N=235). It was found that the quantitative characteristics – amount of milk, butterfat and milk protein, decreased with the increase of the somatic cells level above 1 000 000 cells/ml and the decrease was more obvious for the cows after the 120th day of lactation (23.09% - for the milk yield; 21.62% - for the butterfat and 18.18% - for the milk protein). The obtained number of the somatic cells in the cow milk after the 120th day of the lactation was 1.8 times higher compared to the number of cell elements in the milk of cows before the 120th day of lactation.
