2009
Bashev, Kh. (Institute of Agricultural Economics, Sofia (Bulgaria))
This paper tries to analyze initial impact of CAP on economic, social and environmental sustainability of livestock farms of different type and specialization. A system of indicators is employed giving idea about adaptability of different farms to new market competition, regulations, public support programs, and requirements for management, integration and cooperation. The analysis shows that a large number of livestock farms are experiencing serious problems in adaptation to new market and institutional environment. What is more, many of the instruments of CAP have little or no effect on most farms due to the lack of information, impossibility for participation, and ineffective procedures. Consequently, a great number of livestock farms do not apply sustainable strategies for development and will cease commercial activity or have to transform the type of enterprise. The most important factors for increasing farms sustainability are farmers education, improvement of management of public programs, producers association, and integration with processors.
