First Results from a Research on Punica Granatum for the Conditions of the South Black-Sea Region

During the 2006-2007 period a scientific research has been carried out with 10 varieties and one local form of punica granatum on chernozem smolnik soil type on the teritory of RCNPO-Pomorie. The examined varieties are: Meles, Nikitskii rannii, Al Tosh, Kazake, Luchshii Kazanskii, Albanski, Uzbekskii sladkii, Uzbekskii rannii, Wonderful and Mestna forma № 11. The plants are grown in collective nursery built in 1984 using planting distance 4x4m. There are 10 trees from each variety formed using the bush system. Shah nar is used for a standard. The growth and reproductive indexes of the trees are determined. The dry content, the content of sugar, juice intensity, vit. C, accidity [%] in the fruits is also determined. The tallest variety 370cm with the biggest crown 14,23 m3 and yield, best taste assesment and biochemical indexes is Meles. The biggest fruit weight 413 g and productivity belongs to Nikitskii rannii.
