Bulgaria has not produced any pesticides falling within the scope of the Stockholm Convention on Stable Organic Pollutants, but most of the SOC pesticides have been imported and used mainly as plant protection products. The use of chlororganic SOC pesticides in the country was most widespread during the 60-ies. As a result of irrational planning and overstocking, large amounts of these pesticides have been accumulated that are already outdated. The warehouses for storage of unfit and outdated pesticides are one of the sources of local contamination of the environment. In view of this and accounting for the long decay periods of SOC pesticides, options to render them harmless in an environmentally friendly way should be considered and chosen.
