Mass occurrence of skin abrasion with following infection of wounds and joints was documented in suckling piglets in farrowing pens in a commercial pig farm. Skin trauma was evoked due to the employment of a disinfectant containing glycerin that created an oil film on the flat and smooth surface of plastic gratings where piglets slided back. This induced wound infection and subsequent arthritis caused by Streptococcus suis serovar 1. The absence of disinfection reduced the injuries of thoracic limbs from 70 to 50%. When slippery gratings were covered by plastic mats, the injuries of thoracic limbs were reduced to 7% and those of pelvic limbs to 44%.
