This work presents a simple and rapid method how to determine beer flavours using a stir bar sorptive extraction. A small stir bar (10 mm length, 1.3 mm diameter) coated with polydimethylsiloxane was placed directly into the beer sample and stirred. Then the stir bar was removed, rinsed with distilled water and eluted with 200 microL of organic solvent for gas chromatographic analysis. The method was optimized and the following conditions were proposed: bar length 10 mm, polydimethylsiloxane film thickness 0.5 mm, 1200 rpm during 1 hour, extraction using 200 microL of dichloromethane:hexane 50:50 with 1200 rpm for 40 min. The method is good especially to determine semivolatile esters. Its advantages are small sample volume, simplicity of extraction and only microliters of solvents consumed. It is also much cheaper then other methods using thermal desorption.
