The aim of this study was to evaluate the structure and regeneration of a forest stand in the High Tatra National Park (Slovak Republic) which was damaged during the windstorm in 2004. Tree measurements (tree height, crown base height, dbh and tree crown radius) were conducted in the years 1977, 1998 and 2008 on a permanent research plot of 0.5 ha with a transect of 10 x 70 m composed of Picea abies and Larix decidua. Regeneration processes were also quantified and trees were classified into particular categories. The trees uprooted after the windstorm were distributed almost evenly over all diameter classes up to 54 cm. The high crown ratio (over 66%) does not affect the maintenance of the tree or his uprooting, respectively, during the recorded wind velocity (almost 200 km/h). The forest has showed relatively high stability during the windstorm. The number of remnant trees was sufficient for fulfilling the protection function of the stand. Spruce regeneration processes were good and no significant intervention of the forest manager was needed.
