Variation and associations of seed yield and related traits in Faba Bean (Vicia faba L) landrace of Ethiopia under vertisol condition

This study was carried out to generate information on the extent of variability in the Ethiopian landraces of faba bean and to understand interrelationships among yield and yield related traits on vertisols of Ginichi and Inewari. Thirty-two landraces of faba bean were evaluated for 19 phenological, morphological and agronomic traits. Genotypes differed significantly for all traits except for pod bearing nodes/plant, pods/node and harvest index/ plant at Ghinchi and for seeds/pod, pods/node and harvest index/plant at Inewari. In the combined analysis over locations, genotypic differences were found to be significant for days to flowering, days to maturity, plant height, height to first pod, pod bearing nodes/plant and seed weight only. However, significant genotype x environment interaction was observed for all traits except seed/plant, pods/node, number of branches/plant, number of nodes/plant and harvest index/plant. As indicated by phenotypic and genotypic coefficients of variability, the genotypes had high variability for seed yield/plant, seed yield/plot, harvest index/plant and harvest index/plot at both locations suggesting the possibility of improving these traits through selection. Correlation studies at genotypic as well as phenotypic levels indicated positive associations of seed yield per plot with plant height, height to first pod, seeds/plant, pod index bearing nodes/plant, pods/plant, seed yield/plant, biological yield/plant, biological yield/plot, harvest index/plot, number of branches/plant, and number of nodes/plant; and negative correlation with days to maturity, seed weight and reproductive period at both locations. Path analysis at phenotypic as well as genotypic levels for both locations revealed that biological yield/plot and harvest index/plot were the most important traits in determining seed yield per unit area.
