Hence, the stUdy was carried out on 157 selected higher castes children (7-15 years) from village Mangali to find out the extent of malnutrition, their dietary practices and socio-economic variables associated with the extent of malnutritipn. Majority of children (73.88 percent) were reported to be malnourished when their Weight for Age assessment was done and 20.38 percent ofthe children were found to be undernourished as Height for Age measurement. Further classification of malnourished children was made into 'Mild', 'Moderate' and 'Severe'; the mild category being predominant having percentages such as 40.77 (Weight for Age) and 14.66 (Height for Age) proportionately. The majority of children i. e. 76.62 and 67.53 percent were found to be undernourished when their energy and protein intake were taken into account, respectively. Finally, a series of socio-economic variables such as religion, sex, birth order, literacy index and education of mother had shown specific trend with the extent of malnutrition, although they were not found significantly associated with the extent of malnutrition.
