This research was conducted on safflower as a main oilseed crop in cold drylands using 14 advanced lines selected from F6 of previous crosses at Dryland Agricultural Research Institute, during one year at three research stations including Maragheh, Kurdestan and Shirvan. The fields were prepared in mid-September 2006 and were planted in mid-October. No differences were found between lines at Maragheh and Kurdestan regarding grain yield and other characteristics. However, there was a significant differences on grain yield, plant height, number of grains per head and days to flowering of lines at Shirvan. Compound analysis showed that there is significant difference between treatments and the line numbered 9 derived from cross between 368 and 415 had the highest grain yield with mean 940 kg/ha. Finally, cold tolerant safflower lines were selected for adaptability studies on safflower as a winter crop in cold drylands
