Evaluation of Salinity Tolerance of Exotic Rice Germplasm to Incorporate Tolerance into Rice Breeding Program in Iran

Breeding programs would be highly successful if there is enough genetic variability in the germplasm. Introduction of the new rice genotypes from diverse genetic background will extend the variation in the rice gene-pool. To evaluate salinity stress tolerance of a variety of rice germplasm, 181 rice genotypes have been tested in saline prone area in Northern part of Iran, Guilan and Mazandaran provinces, during year 2005. Sixty-five out of 181 were from Iran, 50 from salt tolerance set, and 66 from 25th set of International Soil Stress Tolerance Nursery (IRSSTN) of International Network for Genetic Evaluation of Rice (INGER2005) both from International Rice Research Institute (IRRI). All plant materials were tested in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 2 and 3 replications in Guilan and Mazandaran experimental sites, respectively. Some important traits including plant height (cm), days to 50% flowering (day), tillering, plant stand (%), salinity index, harvest index and grain yeild have been evaluated. Analysis of variance showed that there were significantly differences among rice genotypes for different traits in the experiments for both experimental sites. Correlation analysis showed a significant negative correlation between salinity index and tillering, plant height, plant stand and grain yield. Cluster analysis has been set rice genotypes in two main groups including susceptible and moderately tolerant genotypes. Based on the Least Significant Difference (LSD) mean comparison method and other analysis 17 rice genotypes including Tarommahali, Hashemi, Salari, Dasht, Hasan-saraei, SHZ2, Pokkali, IR29, Binam, IR74095- AC79, IR74102-3R-5-1, IR73571-3B-11-1, IR74099-3R-2-3, IR67075-2B-5-2, IR65185- 3B-8-3-2, IR67075-2B-15-1, IR67075-2B-2-2 were selected for further analysis and trials from both experimental sites.
