Effect of different dietary levels of barley and cupric sulfate on plasma and egg yolk cholesterol and performance of laying hens

This experiment was conducted to study the effects of different levels of barley (0, 10 20 and 30 % of diet) and copper ( 0 and 200 ppm of diet ) on plasma and egg yolk cholesterol concentration and performance of laying hens.Copper was in the form of cupric sulfate pentahydrate. A total of 128 White Leghorn layers aged 50 weeks were used in a factorial design and randomly distributed into 8 treatment groups each with 4 replicates of 4 birds. Eight isocaloric and isonitrogenous diets were prepared and birds were fed adlibitum on the exprimental diets for 120 days. Feed intake and egg weight on weekly and egg quantity and quality charactristics and cholesterol concentration of plasma and egg yolk determined on monthly basis. Egg yolk cholesterol extracted by the modified Folch procedure and measured by the Zak method. The results showed that different levels of barley and copper had no significant effect on plasma cholesterol except for treatment C2B4 (30% barley with copper) that reduced significantly (P0.05) plasma cholesterol when compared whit control (no added copper) .With increasing barley up to 20 and 30 % of diet, cholesterol content of egg decreased was significantly The treatment C2B1 (0% barley with copper) also decreased egg yolk cholesterol significantly (P0.05) , however increasing barley with copper didn,t reduction in egg yolk cholesterol compared to this treatment. It was concluded that barley and copper both were effective lay reduced egg yolk cholesterol but concomitant using of them had not more effect.
