Nutritive value of tea processing by-product in ruminant nutrition.

In a systematic randomized sampling method, three different tea processing residues were sampled from 20 tea processing plants throughout the Guilan province. The prepared samples were chemically analyzed and the in vitro digestibility was determined, using standard methods. In a feeding trial, alfalfa hay was substituted by tea processing by product (TPB) in amounts of 0.0, 4, 8, 12 and 16 percent and fed to sheep and digestibility and voluntary intake were determined. The total means of CP, EE, CF, Ash, NFE were 14.7 ±1.9, 0.93 ± 0.4, 23.1 ± 4.7, 5.8 ±0.6 and concentration of Ca, P, K and Mg were 0.42 ±0.12, 0.25 ±0.3, 1.6± 0.4 and 0.22 ±0.03 percent respectively. The average content of Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu were 606 ±198, 1139 ±224, 49 ±12 and 46 ±13 mg per kg DM respectively. In vitro digestibility of DM, OM and OMDM were 47.7 ±5.6, 44.4 ±4.5 and 41.6 ±4.1 percent respectively and GE digestibility was 41.5 ±3.9 percent. Results obtained from in vivo digestibility showed that DM, OM and OMDM were 56.8, 59 and 53.6 percent for alfalfa hay that were not significantly affected when TPB was included to the ration, but digestibility of CP was significantly (p0.05) decreased when 16% TPB was used. The digestibility of NDF was significantly (p0.05) reduced at 12 or 16% TPB. Regarding the voluntary intake, alfalfa hay showed the highest and 12 or 16% TPB the lowest (p0.05) amounts of DM and OM intake, however no significant (p0.05) differences was observed when TPB was used in amount of 4%. Similar results were obtained when the intake was estimated based on the digestible DM intake and digestible OM intake. In conclusion, tea processing by-product could be considered as roughage feed but due to the restriction compounds it is recommended to use up to 8 percent of the diet for ruminants.
