Nutritive value of prosopis juliflora pods and its use in the diet of fattening lambs.

Prosopis Juliflora (PJ) was collected from Khuzestan province and chapped in to 1-2 cm and sampled for chemical composition. The In vivo digestibility of PJ pods was determined using of sheep. In the second stage, 64 Arabic male lambs with initial weight of 23.22±3.42.kg and 4-5 months age were used in a completely randomised block design with 4 treatments and 4 blocks (4 animals per block). Four diets contained 0, 7.5, 15 and 22.5 percent of PJ pods were formulated and fed to the experimental lambs for a 90-day period. The animals were slaughtered and carcass characteristics were determined on the end of finishing period. Results indicated that CP, CF, Ash, EE and NFE were 13.07, 22.47, 5.33, 1.00 and 58.23 present in PJ and the digestibility's were 59.78, 63.34 and 60.15 percent for DM, OM, CP whereas the TDN and DE were 62.12 percent an 2.8 McCall/KgDM respectively. Regarding the feeding trial, results showed that the average DM intake were 1114, 1183, 1206 and 1181 g/animal/d for the treatments which were not significantly different. Average daily gain were174.9, 176.7, 178 and 175.6 gr and feed conversion ratio were 6.25, 6.56, 6.73 and 6.31 that were not significantly different among the treatments (P 0.05). The carcass dressing percentage were 46.98, 46.6, 46.79 and 46.45 for the treatments 1, 2, 3 and 4 respectively and no any significantly variation were observed among the treatments for the carcass characteristics (P 0.05). It conclusion, PJ could be used as a ruminant feed and for the case of finishing lambs using it up to 22.5 percent of the diet did not affect the performance of finishing lambs.
