Stability and adaptability of high quality promising rice lines in some different locations of Gilan province.

Adaptability and stability of ten pre-release rice cultivars (genotypes) were determined by sowing them in Randomized Complete Blocks Design (RCBD) with 4 replications at 3 locations (Rasht, Roudsar and Masal) and 3 consecutive years (2004-2006). The agro-morphological traits such as grain yield, panicle number, 100-grain weight, plant height, panicle length, days to maturity and grain quality characters such as amylose content, gelatinization temperature, gel consistency and total rice recovery were measured adopting standard method. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) based on each location revealed that the cultivars were significantly difference for all the observed traits. Combined analysis over all the three locations and years revealed highly significant differences for the eight genotypes studied. Only, grain yield, 100 grain weight, amylose content and gel consistency traits showed location effect significantly different, while for all other traits it showed no significant differences. The location effect was just significant for grain yield, panicle number and grain number per panicle. While, the significant differences were observed for year × location interaction for all traits, exception grain yield and panicle length. The genotype × location interaction was significant for panicle number, grain number per panicle, panicle length and amylose content. The genotype × location × year (G×L×Y) interactions were significant for all characters. It means different genotypes showed different characters in different combination of year and location. Stability analysis revealed cultivars No 6 was most stable genotypes, since it showed the lowest coefficient variation and mean square within each of the location. This stable high yielding cultivar with superior grain quality comparable with Iranian traditional land races is identified for immediate release in Giulan province.
