Advanced Study and Comparison of Quality and Quantity of Date Cultivars Produced by Tissue Culture.
2007
Hajiyan, Sa`id
At the first stage of this research, Deglet Noor, Thoori, Medjool and Barhee as well known commercial date cultivars of the world compared with Sayer as the major cultivar of Khuzesten date plantations (more than 85%). All of the foreign cultivars were propagated by tissue culture technique and were imported from England by governmental sector. The second stage carried out during 1998-2003 in complete block design with three replications at Ahwaz agriculture station. Medjool cultivar had ommited before starting this study due to very high mortality (63%) probably caused by insufficient growth of plantlets or low experiences on carring them at primary growth. Although the trees had not maximum yield due to low age but, the results showed that the yield of Deglet Noor (35.93 kg/tree) was higher than Sayer significantly. Sayer and Barhee cultivars had higher amount of total soluble solids (75.62 and 73.58%, respectively) comparing with Thoori (67.51%) and Deglet Noor (64.53%). The other evaluated quantitative and qualitative fruit characteristics included fruit weight, length, diameter, volume, water content and fruit pulp/seed ratio. Also number of bunches per tree, number of strands per bunch, number of fruits per strand were evaluated. Totally, among the foreign date cultivars in this study, Deglet Noor can be recommended for culturing in Khuzestan province specially central regions due to good adaptability, high yield, favorable fruit quality, good marketability in the world, low costs of marketing in european countries and finally extension policy of dry and semidry date cultivars in Iran. Of course, advanced studies are recommended when the trees will reach to economic bearing age.
