We bred a new late-medium maturing non-glutinous rice variety 'Hyogo-ushiwakamaru'. (1) Heading and maturing date of 'Hyogo-ushiwakamaru' is similar to 'Kinmaze', its maturity is classified as late-medium maturity in Hyogo prefecture. The culm length of this variety is similar to that of 'Kinmaze', but panicle length is longer than 'Kinmaze'. The panicle number per unit area is less than 'Kinmaze', and the plant type is the panicle weight type. Its yielding ability is superior to that of 'Kinmaze', but its appearance grade of brown rice is remarkably inferior to that of 'Kinmaze'. (2) The lodging resistance of 'Hyogo-ushiwakamaru' is superior to that of 'Kinmaze'. 'Hyogo-ushiwakamaru' shows to be little appearance of blast disease, and is resistant to rice stripe disease. (3) Whole-crop yields, fibers and total digestible nutrients content in 'Hyogo-ushiwakamaru' are almost same as those in 'Hoshiaoba'. (4) Budding of 'Hyogo-ushiwakamaru' is good under direct seeding cultivation on flooded paddy field. Furthermore, 'Hyogo-ushiwakamaru' is expected for using as source of biomass energy.
