Effects of nutritional levels in TMR with supplemented concentrates fed by automatic feeder on milk performance in mid lactating cow

Four Holstein cows were fed two nutritional levels of total mixed ration (TMR), each at two amounts of supplemental concentrates to clarify the optimal distribution of nutrients to TMR or concentrates to get maximal milk production. Mid-lactating cows were randomly assigned to 4x4 Latin square trial with four, 2-wk periods. Milk yields, milk quality and feed intake were evaluated at the last 3 days of each experimental period. Rumen fluids were also collected at the last day of experimental period for following pH and VFA content analysis. 1. Cows ate concentrates completely in all situations. TMR intake was increased significantly (p0.05) in cows fed TMR with higher nutritional level (high TMR) than that with lower level (low TMR). Supplemental concentrates significantly depress (p0.05) TMR intake. Total DMI were higher (p0.05) when cows were fed more concentrates. 2. High TMR significantly enhanced daily milk yields. However, milk quality was not affected by each treatment. 3. The pH in rumen fluid was lower in cows fed high TMR. Each VFAs were not affected by treatments, however, acetate propionate ratio were significantly higher when cows fed low TMR. These results suggested that cows primary ate concentrates whether nutritional level of TMR were high or low. And TMR with lower nutritional level couldn't maintain the milk production.
