A new variety of non-glutinous paddy rice, 'Fukkurinko' was developed at Hokkaido Dohnan Agricultural Experiment Station and was registered as a recommended variety of Hokkaido in 2003. It was selected from the progeny of 'Kuhkei 90242B/Jyoh-iku No. 418 (Hoshinoyume)', which was crossed at Hokkaido Central Agricultural Experiment Station in 1993. For rapid generation advancement, the Fsub(1) plants were raised in a greenhouse at Hokkaido Central Agricultural Experiment Station during winter in 1993/1994 and the Fsub(2) and Fsub(3) populations were grown in Kagoshima prefecture by double cropping in 1994/1995. The main characteristics of 'Fukkurinko' are summarized as follows : Heading time and maturation period is later than that of 'Kirara397' and 'Hoshinoyume'. Culm length is longer than that of 'Kirara397', and similar to that of 'Hoshinoyume'. Ear length is longer than that of 'Kirara397' and 'Hoshinoyume'. The number of ear was larger than that of 'Kirara397' and smaller than that of 'Hoshinoyume'. It belongs to the panicle-number type. It has small and short awns. The glume top is yellow-white. Cool weather tolerance at the booting stage is strong and is superior to that of 'Kirara397' and similar to that of 'Hoshinoyume'. Field resistance to the blast is poor and is somewhat inferior to that of 'Kirara397' and somewhat superior to that of 'Hoshinoyume'. This variety possesses the true resistant genes, Pia, Pii and Pik. Lodging resistance in the field is similar to that of 'Kirara397' and is superior to that of 'Hoshinoyume'. Yield potential is similar to that of 'Kirara397' and higher than that of 'Hoshinoyume'. Grain quality and grain quality test ranking are similar to that of 'Kirara397' and 'Hoshinoyume'. Amylose content of polished rice is similar to that of 'Hoshinoyume', but protein content is less than that of 'Kirara397' and 'Hoshinoyume'. Eating quality is clearly superior to that of 'Kirara397' and somewhat superior to that of 'Hoshinoyume'. From the characteristics mentioned above, 'Fukkurinko' is expected to replace a part of 'Kirara397' at Dohnan south area in Hokkaido. Then it would adjust the overproduction of middle maturate varieties of paddy rice at this area and would contribute to the stable production of good grain quality and eating quality rice.
