Present state and future prospects for GIS as an environmental information system: A case study of land-use analysis in the Lake Biwa drainage basin

The aim of this study is to show the present state and future prospects for GIS as an environmental information system through a land-use analysis in the Lake Biwa drainage basin, focusing on the functionality of the most-used information analysis tool in environmental science. The findings of this study can be summarized in the following two points: (1) Based on land-use analysis in the Lake Biwa drainage basin, it was possible to offer more effective information for policy decisions about land use, utilizing the functionality of GIS as a tool for information analysis. Specifically, based on the results of land-use analysis using GIS, I suggested the method to provide information on appropriate land use for the Lake Biwa Comprehensive Conservation Plan (the Mother Lake 21 plan). (2) As the most important avenue for future research on GIS as a tool for information analysis in the Lake Biwa region, I proposed a description of the relationship between land use in the drainage basin and the environment in the lake. Additionally, it was feasible to show a direction for the future development of GIS as an environmental information system by combining its plural functions to promote cooperative activities among various institutions and organizations in local communities.
