Stable isotope ratio analysis for verifying the geographical origin of cultured eel in Japan

We determined the carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen isotope ratios of domestic and imported (China and Taiwan) cultured eel, to devise a tool for verifying the geographical origin of eel commercially distributed in Japan. Carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios of domestic eel (deltasup(13)C = -17.6 +- 0.6 permille (mean +- SD) and deltasup(15)N = +16.4 +- 0.7 permille) were higher than those of Taiwan (deltasup(13)C = -20.5 +- 0.7 permille and deltasup(15)N = +13.2 +- 1.5 permille) and Chinese (deltasup(13)C = -21.4 +- 0.5 permille and deltasup(15)N = +14.3 +- 0.9 permille) eel. On the other hand, the oxygen isotope ratio of domestic eel (+7.4 +- 1.4 permille) was lower than that of Taiwan (+ 10.0 +- 1.3 permille) and Chinese (+ 11.1 +- 0.9 permille) eel. These results suggest that carbon, nitrogen and oxygen stable isotope-ratio analysis is applicable as a potential tool for discriminating between domestic and imported cultured eels.
