Chemical state of silver in the antibacterial glaze of sanitary ware

The chemical state of silver added to the glaze of sanitary ware to give antibacterial properties was investigated by using X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS). The glaze was amorphous aluminosilicate, and the concentration of silver was about 0.08 mass% converted to Ag2O. The antibacterial properties against Staphylococcus aureus were confirmed by the film-covered method. Antibacterial glaze containing silver inhibited propagation of Staphylococcus aureus compared with non-antibacterial glaze. It is obvious that silver contributes to antibacterial properties. XAFS measurement was carried out at BL14B2 SPring-8 with the fluorescence mode. The edge energy of the antibacterial glaze was similar to that of Ag2O and it revealed that the major component of silver in the antibacterial glaze was monovalent cations. The spectrum shape of the antibacterial glaze was different from that of metallic silver and silver oxide. It is concluded that silver dissolves as monovalent cations in the glaze without forming a crystal structure such as metallic silver or silver oxide.
