Recently, the number of pigs affected by acute swine erysipelas (SE) has been increasing in Gunma prefecture. The latex agglutination test (LA) has been used routinely as a serological diagnostic method to SE. As most of the pigs examined so far have shown the antibody to SE by LA, we could not find the difference between farms, age of pigs or vaccinated and non-vaccinated groups by the serological tests. Thus, we compared the results of 148 sera from 9 farms by LA, growth agglutination tests (GA) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay with surface protective antigen SpaA(SpaA-ELISA) to find out the suitable serological diagnostic method to control SE. As a result, all of 99% were positive by LA, and 60% were negative by GA and SpaA-ELISA. Most of the positive samples by GA and SpaA-ELISA were collected from adult (1 year old or more) or vaccinated pigs and there were clear distinctions between farms, age of pigs and vaccinated groups.
