[Influence of copper on selenium accumulation in maize [Zea mays] and sunflower [Helianthus annuus]

Selenium belongs to nutrient elements conventionally required by plants and moreover, due to its antioxidant properties, selenium is an essential microelement for humans and animals. In this context, it is of great importance to study the conditions of its accumulation by food and feed crops. The bioaccumulation of selenium in aerial parts of maize and sunflower was studied in relation to total copper content and copper/selenium relationship in the sol. The analysed samples corresponded to the following vegetative stages: maize-heading stage, sunflower-early flowering stage. The obtained results point out that there are fundamental differences between maize and sunflower in the nature of the influence of soil copper content on selenium accumulation by the plants. In particular, a positive correlation is observed between soil copper content and selenium content in maize. However, when soil copper reaches up to 30-35 mg/kg, the tendency for a decrease of selenium in maize is noted. For sunflower the increase of soil copper is accompanied by the decrease of selenium in the plant, but the correlative dependence between these parameters is very weak. The substitution of absolute values of copper concentration by copper/selenium correlation does not significantly changes the character of the influence of copper on selenium accumulation by plants.
