This study focused on the identification of prevalent Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) races in major inbred and hybrid rice growing areas. The main goal of this endeavor is to generate a database of Xoo races distribution in the Philippines. The identification and characterization of the prevailing Xoo races in specific area will provide enormous information on the efficient deployment of genes for resistance against disease. Different Pxo isolates were collected in the major inbred and hybrid rice growing areas in the Philippines and were inoculated onto the seven bacterial blight near isogenic lines (BB-NILs) developed by IRRI. The virulence pattern of the collected BB-NILs were compared to the virulence pattern of the standard Pxo races to determine the race of each isolate. Results indicated that in the Northern and Central Luzon, the isolates had diverse reaction patterns that were similar to that of races 3b, 5, and 9. In Eastern Visayas, isolates with virulence patterns similar to race 8 were more prevalent than the other races. In Southern Mindanao, majority of the isolates had the same BB disease reaction pattern as that of race 9. The rest of the isolates only slightly resembled the same BB races. Based on the results, it is recommended to collect more BB isolates in other areas of the Philippines and their reaction patterns verified especially those whose BB-NILs reactions are not clear. Although these phenotypic data could give us an idea of the possible races in the region, it is necessary to have a molecular analysis for further characterization of the races present.
