The rapid adoption by rice farmers of knowledge-intensive technologies, such as fertilizer, best-management practices, requires simple tools that enable agricultural technicians to quickly formulate guidelines for improved management tailored to specific fields. The authors developed a computer-assisted tool that uses the principles of site-specific nutrient management for specific rice fields. The tool- 'nutrient manager'- consists of about 10 questions with multiple choice answers that can be answered for specific rice fields from existing knowledge. Based on responses to the questions, printable guidelines for rates and timing of fertilizer N,P, and K are provided for rice field. Total fertilizer costs for the provided guidelines can be estimated on the basis of local fertilizer price supplied by the user. 'Nutrient Manager' accommodate both transplanted and wet-seeded rice with a range of growth duration from seed to harvest and it is compatible with crop management approaches that are based on critical growth stages.
