One of the five thrusts of research proposed by Mitchell and Sheehy (2007) in order to construct a C4 rice is the evaluation of materials in the IRRI gene bank from which a breeding program could start. There are about 6,000 wild rice accessions in the IRRI germplasm collection. The wild types have not been studied in detail, but past work has suggested that some of these wild types have anatomical features peculiar to C4 plants. The authors are currently building this new database to characterize some of the attributes of the leaves of these wild rices. The aim was to search for tendencies toward C4-ness and to make definitive records (gold standard) of vein spacing, size of bundle sheath cells, chloroplasts in bundle sheath cells, and number of mesophyll cells between adjacent veins. At the moment, the database contains anatomical descriptions of some 2,100 accessions. Although the project needs a few more years of work in depth and need regular update, the authors believe that its utility for rice scientists is very high, especially for a preliminary study of C4-ness in rice.
