The study was conducted to promote utilization of indigenous vegetable through women training. Six batches of trainings were conducted from January 2005 to February 2006 with a total of 189 participants which consisted of housewives, household members, Agricultural Technologists, Food Always in the Home (FAITH) Coordinators, Rural Improvement Club (RIC) teachers, gardeners and farmers from Bay, Laguna [Philippines] and other nearby municipalities using a three part training module in participatory approach. The training emphasized the vital role of parents, especially women, on the production, conservation and utilization of indigenous vegetables through home gardening schemes. It also enhances the participation of men because of the economic potential of indigenous vegetables. Based on the pre-knowledge assessment, 72% of 189 participants were familiar with kangkong, amaranth, okra, smooth luffa, jute, malabar spinach, bitter gourd, roselle, tomato, squash, ivy gourd, eggplant, vegetable soybean and horse radish tree. More than 90% of them have already experienced growing these kinds of vegetables. An increase in knowledge or indigenous vegetable and their utilization were noted and initial seeds were given to each participant for them to start with. A number of home and community gardens were established after the training. Forty one recipes using indigenous vegetable as the main ingredient were developed during the training and were published in a recipe book to be used as a promotional material for indigenous vegetable utilization.
