Enhancing yield of onion (Allium cepa L.) through mycorrhizal inoculation in Meloidogyne graminicola-infested soil

Mycorrhizal inoculant containing a mixture of vesicular arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (VAMF) - Glomus mosseae, G. fasciculum and mykovam, improved the growth of Yellow Granex and Red Creole onions in the presence or absence of Meloidogyne graminicola in P-deficient soil. In fertilized soil without nematode, bulb weight of mycorrhizal Yellow Granex increased by 54% and bulb diameter by 24% while those of mycorrhizal Re4d Creole increased by 23% and 13%, respectively. In nematode-infested soil, Red Creole did not respond to mycorrhizal inoculation but Yellow Granex showed tolerance to M. graminicola with increased bulb weight by 262% and bulb diameter by96.4%. Under field conditions, VAM application enhanced the growth and yield of Yellow Granex but had no effecft on Red Creole. Height of Yellow Granex increased 10% , leaf weight by 27%, and bulb diameter by 8% at low N and available P in the soil. Higher rates of N and additional P did not contribute any increase in yield indicating that high fertilizer inputs were unnecessary when VAMF are present in the roots.
