A set of 20 diverse wheat advanced lines were planted to study the manifestation of some important quality attributes viz., thousand kernel weight (TKW), grain hardness or particle size index (PSI), grain ash, grain protein, wet and dry gluten content under rainfed conditions. All the genotypes differed significantly for planting time and genotype x planting time interactions except hardness for planting time. For this group of genotypes reduction in TKW ranged between 0.2% and 34.3% under late planting. Therefore, TKW when considered as index of grain size greatly influenced, through the relative proportions of endosperm/bran content, the PSI value, ash and protein contents. This is reflected by respective simple correlation coefficient values. Thousand kernel weight or grain size was found the most important quality attributes to be managed for minimum losses during stresses at grain filling stage i.e., temperature and soil nutrients nitrogen and phosphorous (NandP) under rainfed conditions. This kind of management will increase the chances to harvest a good quality crop. This needs to be addressed by both crop improvement and management practices.
