Evaluation of upland rice production systems of three indigenous communities in Maguindanao province, Philippines

The experiment was conducted in Maguindanao, Philippines during WS [wet season] 2005. The main objective of the study is to evaluate the productivity of three traditional upland rice production systems in Maguindanao. The on-farm experiment was laid out in a split-split-split plot in RCBD replicated three times. The main plot treatments (location), sub-plot (variety), sub-sub plot (green leaf manure) and sub-sub-sub plot (production systems). Lack of capital, technical knowledge, variety, weeds and linkages to NGOs [non-government organizations] academic institutions, research institutions and NGOs were the primary factors that affect their productivity. The high grain yield, DMY [dry matter yield], HI [harvest index] and LAI [leaf area index] was obtained in Matanog and is associated with the high-soil organic matter content (5%). Grain yield responds to green leaf manures with grain yields of 3.13 t/ha and 2.88 t/ha using Gliricidia sepium and Arachis pintoi, respectively. Highest grain yield of 2.25 t/ha was recorded in the improved rice production system. Grain yields obtained were higher than the upland rice yields commonly reported.
